February 22 “From New Worlds” and The Young Artist Competition

This year’s February concert features The Young Artist Competition winner playing Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin, as well as other “New World” pieces, including favorite Dance Macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns. The concert will end with the ever popular favorite Anton Dvorak’s New World Symphony.

The Young Artist Competition and Concert, established in 1959, fosters local musical talent and provides exceptional opportunities for young musicians. Alternating annually between central Nebraska high school students and college students, the program offers participants the chance to perform with a professional orchestra, a rare and invaluable experience for aspiring artists.

This year’s winner is Elliot Maschka.  Elliot is originally from Englewood, CO.  Elliot has been playing piano since he was 5 years old and is currently a student of Dr. Jonathan Sokasits at Hastings College.  He is also a member of the Hastings College band, playing tenor saxophone. Other interested include hiking and spending time outdoors.

After college Elliot plans to attend seminary in Denver, Co and continue to play piano as a passion and hobby.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play Rhapsody in Blue with the Hastings Symphony as this has been a dream of mine since I first heard the piece.” – Elliot Maschka
